2016-2017 Late Starts

The Ellensburg School Board has joined most other districts in the State and is moving to a late start model during the 2016-2017 school year.  Effective in September, school will start one-hour late every Monday to allow teachers to collaborate and work to improve student learning while meeting the Common Core State Standards.  Here are some links to provide background information:

Summer Bookmobile
The dates for the Summer Bookmobile are:  Tuesday, June 28th, Tuesday, July 5th, Tuesday, July 12th, Tuesday, July 19th and Tuesday, July 26th.
Exact times and locations will be announced in June before school is dismissed for the Summer.  If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please send an email to mandi.laurent@esd401.org with your name and contact information and the dates you would be available to help.
Nominations
Referrals for the district’s elementary Highly Capable programs, Discovery & Challenge should have been turned in by April 8th.
Referrals will be screened, and permission to test forms, along with the parent and teacher surveys, will be sent out if the student meets the screening criteria. The Cognitive Abilities Test and the Iowa Test of Basic Skills are the assessments used, along with teacher and parent surveys. Remember that no multiple choice test is perfect, and your child may have gifts that are hard to identify on a test! The CogAT is, however, one of the best and most current tests available. Please check the district’s website for additional information about the curriculum, policies, and procedures. (Policies and procedures are 2190 and 2190p, under Learning Programs and Supports.)

Kindergarten registration was April 6 and April 7.

Kindergarten registration is for children entering kindergarten in September of 2016.  Students must be five (5) years old by August 31, 2016, to register.  The district will not be accepting early entrance kindergarten registrations.

A Certified Birth Certificate is required to register your child for kindergarten.  Because school records are considered legal documents, all students enrolling in the Ellensburg School District must be enrolled by their LEGAL first and last names.  Washington State Birth Certificates are available for purchase ($20.00) through the Public Health Department (962-7515).  For out-of-state birth certificates contact that State’s Vital Records Department.

Your child’s Immunization Record is also required to register your child.  Kindergarten students need to have a Certificate of Immunization form filled out with all required immunizations by the first day of school or an exemption form signed.  If they do not have all required immunizations, they will be admitted to school on a conditional basis and parents have 30 days from the first day of school to complete their immunizations or have an exemption signed by a doctor.  If immunizations are not up to date or an exemption is not signed at the end of the 30 days, the student will be excluded from school. Keep in mind, if there is a communicable disease outbreak, students with an exemption will not be allowed to attend school for the incubation period (example: pertussis (whooping cough) = 21 days).

If you have not registered your child for kindergarten, you may pick up kindergarten registration packets at any elementary school after April 15, 2016.
